Seaton

SEATON is often referred to as the gateway to Devon's Heritage Coast. Situated at the mouth of the River Axe, the town is sheltered by the white cliffs of Beer Head and the red sandstone of Haven Cliff, which overlook the waters of Lyme Bay. The pebbled beach is backed by a walled promenade and the town is also blessed with a lovely harbour.

In the surrounding countryside there are dozens of walks to enjoy; an energetic walk along the South West Coastal path to Lyme Regis, via the Undercliff nature reserve, reveals some spectacular scenery.

The pedestrianised town centre offers a wealth of shops for those keen on a little retail therapy, and there is also a popular farmers' market held once a month on a Friday.

Seaton is famous for its unique Tramway that runs from Seaton through Colyford and into the picturesque town of Colyton. You can enjoy panoramic views of the Axe estuary where you will find herons, ducks, waders, cormorants and kingfishers plus other wildlife from the open toppers, whilst shelter from the weather is provided by elegant, enclosed single deckers. The station at Colyton has been extended to provide room for a larger shop and the Tram Stop Restaurant, which offers an extensive menu. Special events are held throughout the season, including regulars such as Tram Driving Lessons and Bird Watching Trips.

A visit to the Axe Valley Heritage Museum, located at Seaton Town Hall in Fore Street, is an ideal way to learn about the history of Seaton. Fascinating displays show the phases of development of the area, including a collection of photographs showing the Seaton of yesteryear.
One of Seaton's main annual events is Axe Marine Week; held at the end of July it offers a great range of events for all the family, including raft races, crab-catching competitions, it's a knockout event, circus workshop and much more. The week culminates with a grand firework display.

Another popular annual event is Seaton Carnival, a week of fun-filled events for all the family to enjoy, climaxing with the grand procession through the streets of the town.
