Exeter

EXETER has a wealth of culture, history and heritage as well as delightful countryside. This beautiful city has grown from Roman origins and has benefited from great prosperity since the 16th century. Despite the destruction of a quarter of Exeter's city centre during the Second World War there are 15 conservation areas, which include the Cathedral of St Peter, the City Wall, Rougemont Castle and the Canal Basin.

Exeter's skyline is dominated by the two imposing towers of the medieval Cathedral, which was completed in 1394 and founded on the site of a 7th century abbey. Once inside visitors are faced with the longest unbroken Gothic vaulted ceiling in the world. Outside, beneath the cathedral's green, a Roman bathhouse lies hidden.

The Historic Quayside provides a lovely atmosphere in which to relax and stroll around. Various old buildings and warehouses date back to Charles II. Visitors can browse the antiques and craft shops or enjoy a drink and snack from the many nearby pubs or cafes. Displays in the Quay House Visitor Centre depict 2,000 years of the city's development, which is also brought to life in an exciting video.

The Royal Albert Memorial Museum also offers a great insight into Exeter's history, plus collections of ceramics, silvers, fine arts and antiques. Exeter's Phoenix Arts Centre provides something for all tastes with a range of contemporary performances, activities and exhibitions.

A year-round calendar of events includes Arts Festivals, Antiques Fairs, a regional Food & Drink Festival as well as a host of other celebrations.

Exeter is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city with a lovely shopping centre, a range of sports activities and yet close enough to explore the nearby coast, countryside and national parks, in fact it has something for everyone!
