The 2.4 million Nothe Fort restoration project began with a visit by South Dorset MP Jim Knight.
The Heritage Lottery Fund will provide £1.8 million towards the cost of the project and the fort's volunteers have worked tirelessly to raise a further £600,000.
The money will enable problems such as corroding ironwork, weather proofing and crumbling concrete to be addressed.
Since Weymouth Civic Society took over the nmanagement of the fort 25 years ago volunteers have worked to make what was a derelict ruin into one of Weymouth's most popular tourist attractions.
When the project is complete it should give the fort at least another 50 years of life.
