Published on 16 Feb 12
This year's prized Jurassic Coast Award has been presented to Bournemouth based tour company Discover Dorset Tours.
The company that runs guided tours of the Jurassic Coast aboard their distinctive zebra- striped mini-buses were chosen for their contribution towards helping visitors appreciate and protect the Jurassic Coast.
The Jurassic Coast Award celebrates those who have made outstanding contributions to the Jurassic Coast. Each year the award focuses on a different group and this year's award focused on the business sector, recognising organisations that facilitate tourism, promote sustainability and really contribute to the Jurassic Coast area.
Discover Dorset Tours stood out as a business which helps visitors explore, understand and enjoy the Jurassic Coast - whilst at the same time helping to look after it.
Sponsored by the Fine Family Foundation, the Award supports the aims of the Jurassic Coast Trust:
'Any business that welcomes visitors to the Jurassic Coast is in a strong position to influence how people discover, understand and treat it' said Sibyl King, who is also a Jurassic Coast Trustee. 'They can also help look after it in their own practices. Discover Dorset were exceptional in their creative and enthusiastic approach to their tours and their commitment to the Jurassic Coast'.
Managing Director of Discover Dorset Tours, Tim Sanders built his business from scratch as a result of World Heritage designation in 2001.
Discover Dorset has also won praise from Sally King, World Heritage Team's Visitor Services Manager: 'We have always been impressed by Tim's enthusiasm to help visitors experience the World Heritage Site and his on -going efforts to reduce visitor impact and keep the coast special'.
The Jurassic Coast Trust, a charity set up in direct response to World Heritage designation, raises funds to help maintain, conserve and create understanding of the Jurassic Coast – England's first and only natural World Heritage Site. The Jurassic Coast Trust and Jurassic Coast World Heritage Team are currently working together to develop ways in which businesses can strengthen their links and support for the Jurassic Coast.
