Trek the Jurassic Coast with Christian Aid
Published on 17 Aug 10
Christian Aid has launched a brand new two-day, 24 mile trek along the Dorset and Devon coastline - The Jurassic Coast Challenge.
Walkers of all levels are welcome to join the weekend trek which begins in Sidmouth on 17 September and ends in West Bay on 19 September.
The South West Coastal Path, a section of which the group will walk, is the UK's first natural World Heritage Site and stretches for 95 miles. The rocks along this breathtaking section of coastline record 185 million years of the earth's history, hence the name Jurassic Coast Challenge.
The weekend begins with an evening meal as everyone gets a chance to meet one another before the walk begins in Sidmouth on the Saturday morning. The first day trekking takes in the small village of Beer, the magnificent Undercliffs National Nature Reserve and passes the town of Axmouth on its 15-mile route to Lyme Bay. Day two and it's a more leisurely 9-mile hike; from Lyme Regis through to Charmouth followed by an uphill climb to Golden Cap, the highest point of the South West Coastal Point, before arriving at the finishing point of West Bay.
Alison Gregory, Events Manager at Christian Aid said: 'This walk is a real challenge but the views are well worth the blisters. Trekking events are a great way to get fit and make new friends, as well as raise money for Christian Aid's vital work with poor communities around the world. We encourage people to join as individuals, couples or even groups, the more the merrier!'
Registration costs £50 and participants are asked to raise a minimum sponsorship of £500. Everyone taking part will receive an exclusive Christian Aid t-shirt, nutritional and training advice, a fundraising pack and a warm feeling inside knowing they are raising money for a great cause.
Also included in the registration fee are tents, camp site fees, meals and shuttle transfers between the trek route and campsite.
